This article "Tragedy and the common man" by Arthur Miller implies that tragedy can be understand by everyone, expectantly by the common man. He starts with pointing out that tragedy is for everyone."The inevitable conclusion is, of course, that the tragic mode is archaic, fit only for the very highly placed, the kings or the kingly," Arthur Miller. He start saying that most of the times tragedy happens to the king or kingly because they have a lot more at stake and more responsibility's.He goes and explains how it isn't just for the higher classed people but even the common man can experience it. He starts to explain this with using Oedipus, and Orestes,. He then goes to say that everyone can relate on an emotional level to those tragedy's. Then Miller Goes into how every tragedy it based off of there moral and there personal sense of dignity. He then goes on the feelings and emotion that are involved in tragedy's. The part that we connect. Miller gives the examples of Orestes, Hamlet, Medea, and Macbeth, saying the "underlying struggle is that of the individual attempting to gain his 'rightful' position in his society."I believe that this really connects to the common mas and today's world This article helps with showing that its not always the kings or prince or someone in high position that experiences or can relate to it. The common man can also have it happen to him too. He can also relate to the tragic event.

Antigone Is one of the stories done by Sophocles. It shows that a sometimes there's a tragedy inside of a tragedy. The main Tragedy is the one where Antigone has to do something for her brother who was killed in battle. So she tries to give him a proper burial. Kreon is against this and says anyone who tries to move the body or anything will be stoned to death even though he is burying the other brother Eudicles who died in the same fight. Polynesis was classified as a traitor. Then the second tragedy is the ending with the results of Kreon trying to stay with the law. This leads to the death of every one else in there family except Kreon and Ismeme. This all starts with Antigone coming back to hopefully save her brothers from the prophesy saying that they will die in battle. This prophesy again just like in Oedipus is the fuel that feeds the fire in the story. Kreon is afraid that if he makes sure that he isn't buried the gods would be pleased in him but it just lead to the end of the rest of his family. He finds out that Antigone did bury her brothers body. She was caught in the act knowing the consequence of it. Shes brought to Kreon and then he wants to kill her. so he send her to the cave for her to be buried alive there. Then his son comes up to talk for the people because they are afraid to go against Kreon. He is against having her killed and The people think that what she did was heroic. Kreon rejects this and threats to kill Antigone and his son right then and there. so he leaves and then the blind prophet comes and says the same but also says it might be to late to save them. he finally changes his mind and goes to get Antigone. When he gets there he sees that she hanged her self and Hamon his son how is engaged to her is there and he swings his sword at him and misses so he kills himself. This has a truly emotional part of literary tragedy. With 2 forms of tragedy. and the true devotion for her brother. Text, What is text? Is it a book, or a news article? Or is it something completely different? After watching Ben's presentation I think text is a lot more then we think. It could be a story some author wrote, or it could be a song. It could even be a picture. This has changed my perception on text. I though it had to be some type of written word. It has opened my mind a little bit more. The second image was a peace sign with the Eiffel Tower in it. It was ex post you make you have a connection to the image with the man hunched over with flowers by his feet and candles. connecting it to the Paris attack. Without the second image you still think it was a death or a memorial of some sort, But you don't make the connection till later with the other image with it I can use this to explain another way of interpretations of tragedy and how images can explain an tragic event. There is a happy ending in the real world not just in literary writing. This attack on paris has a happy ending. Some people could argue the end isn't here yet but its the end of that battle but not the end of the war. So we do have a ending, and the ending for that tragic event is that all the countries that believe in freedom are coming together to help France and support them. Its not just a literary thing. It does apply to real life all tragic event have connected people together. No madder how big or small. Inside the video on Ted Talks called " Are We In Control of our Own Decisions" It talked about visual illusion. This was very interesting because I'm big on perception. He throws the question out there are we in control. He then shows us illusions and how they work and how even though you know the truth you still are tricked into believing it again. With this being known how come can we have so many mistakes in something we do daily. So how many mistakes do we have with things we don't do as often like planning a trip or finances. He then shows us a graph of organ donors around the world. it shows how some countries have really high donation and then others with really low donation. There isn't much for the middle and then he explains that it was all because of how the question was written. Even though most people though it was a culture difference but a lot of the countries have the similar culture believes. Then he shows s the question the first one is "check this box if you want to participate in the organ donation program and then the other countries that had high amounts of donation had one similar but it said this " If you do not want to participate in the organ donation program then check this box. This then applies if we are really in charge of our own decisions. The answer is no, It it the one who set up your questions that make your decisions. Just like in the form for the donations, you can chose what someone will choose if you have a inferior choice related to the other 2 choices. Then the one related to the inferior choose seems like a greater choice. If u get rid of the inferior choice then the likelihood of it having the same facts is completely different. Though out the story of Oedipus he has the oracle prophesy over him since hes the kings son. He was at a young age so he doesn't remember but his parents find out that he is expose to kill his father and marry his mother and so they put him tied outside to be eaten by the dogs. This is how the tragic event of his life starts. just like all other stories the Oracle is always right. It even goes to show that they know what was going to happen even after what they say to them and it is unavoidable. Oedipus becomes obsessed with who killed Laius which then starts to affect his family and his happiness and leads to his mother/wife Jocasta death. he finds out that all his past is a lie and blames it on his wife. So he goes to find her to get revenge but she ends up killing herself and then Oedipus Pretty much has a mentle breakdown and rips out his eyes. That have lied to him. You see a lot of irony though out the play and shows that the higher you are the harder you can fall and the more damage you can do. Then the irony plays into place with all the curses and how he said the perpetrator will be kicked out of Thebes and so he banishes himself and steps down while his uncle/brother Creon takes place. This whole story shows tragedy and irony. the tragic part wasn't actually doing the events in the prophecy it was how he found out and the reactions of it. Its shows all the character traits of tragedy it has a hero, Oedipus who has a problem, The obsession of finding Laius killer. Then the knowledge comes to him and then the reaction comes out which is the tragic part. Then after he finds out his wife killed her self then he stabs his eyes and the positive thing is that he is now more wiser and knowledgeable. Nobility is all about perception. Some event that happens may be heroic, but then to that person it happened to could be tragic. This whole though came from Joseph Krutch. He starts out with a quote from Aristotle saying "tragedy is the imitation of noble actions." Then he says that imitation seemed "naive". in the second paragraph he says that "expression" best describes the artistic purpose. "Tragedy is not, then, as Aristotle said, the imitation of noble actions, for, indeed, no one knows what a noble action is or whether or not such a thing as nobility exists in nature apart from the mind of man." Krutch then uses the story of Achilles dragging Hectors dead body, and how that was a noble action back then but to us now isn't so noble. This is why he liked it saying "Tragedy is the expression of noble actions." Nobility is inseparable from tragedy. If it doesn't then it sure does represents actions known for being noble. Normally in a tragic event theirs some sort of calamity that happens because of the short coming of the hero. Calamity isnt just gloomy and depressing. It also a motavation to try harder and to get past it. Now even though tragedy had calamity in it most of the times but it isnt just about the despair its more about the triumph over the despair. "All works of art which deserve there name have a happy end." This is so true for anything that wants human attention needs a happy ending. even though it might not be the way the reader wants it, But there can still be a happy ending. This Paper has a lot of information, and twists even the smartest of people who thought they had tragedy in the bag. it shows that theirs calamity's but also overcoming. In the video A kinder, gentler philosophy of success, By Alainde Botton it brings up many thoughts about success and ties it up with tragedy. It show how humans categorize success and snobbery. When people think about success a few of the first things that come to mind is he must of gotten money or got a higher position in his work. Theirs way more to it then that. Success is knowing that you won't pass every challenge in your life. it's knowing that there will be hard times and you will find a way to keep going. Every human on this earth will have some challenge against there progress and it will shake them to there core. Theirs many things that can get in the way of you finding success. a few of those are snobs, and your envy these can stop you from being successful. "Snobs are anyone who finds something wrong about you or uses something to bring you down." This world is full of those. You will find them every where you go. there's always someone trying to bring you down. We live in a country that believes in equality and if you try hard enough and put in the time then you deserve where you get. In this believe you also believe that people who dont try then belong at the bottem Which we call the "losers" which isnt fair. no one can be perfect at every thing. So does that make every one a "loser." This also ties into envy that he talked about. Envy happens when theirs 2 people close to the same standing. "You don't see people envying the queen of England, shes just to weird." Most people aren't at her level anyways and so no one envy's her We need to define success and failure by are self and not how the world puts it into order. This is the big thing I have learned from this video and how you are in control of what your success and failures look like. There's so many types of tragedy's, There's the one that we think in this generation which is a death or just a bad event that happened, like a break up in a relationship, or a close friend to you dies in a car accident. You or a friend who's left in a worse position then before. All of these are tragedy's in our time but it all started in Greek plays Back 2500 Years ago Greece used to have plays in the theater. (That's not the movie grease that was way after all this.) The original people who made these plays are Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. only a few things have survived since they made all there plays and skits, but we can still enjoy there work in these days. They had wonderful plays that display tragedy, at its real definition. Which from wikipedia is "tragedy is a form of drama based on human suffering that invokes in its audience an accompanying catharsis or pleasure in the viewing." Theirs a lot of different views on tragedy. The real form of tragedy does have a happy ending. If it doesn't then it isn't a true tragic play or movie. this is shown in hamlet. You could be thinking yea Hamlet was tragic but how did it have a happy ending? well it does when you look into the ending of Hamlet after he killed his uncle for killing his father and Hamlet ends up poisoned and died too. but if you look at the ending when the new king comes in to see everyone died. He takes the place as his own and now that all that corruption is out of Denmark. They can start all over again with a new king. All tradic stories have happy endings, you just have to dig deaper in the ending of the story. They might not just till you flat out. |
